Description
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200. Hi there! I’m Kailua but you can call me Koko because I respond to that better than my full name. I am a little over 2 years old and my energy level shows it. At the foster home I’m at right now there is another dog that’s just like me! We get along great! He understands my mouthy play style and enjoys being chased when we are outside together. I honestly enjoy being outside the best but my foster mom says I have selective hearing when I am outside so we are working on that. Even though I like being outside the best, I do really well inside the house too. I have a lot of Kong toys! My foster mom appreciates how nice I am to my toys because my foster brother is not always very nice to his toys. We really like playing tug of war together and then we’ll snuggle up together on the dog bed for a little nap. Besides my foster mom, I have a foster dad, and there are two smaller humans in the house. Foster mom says they are 11 and 8 years old, but I think she is mistaken. They run around and have energy like a 1 year old puppy! I really enjoy playing with them and when they rub my tummy. When none of the humans are home or when they are all sleeping I do go in my kennel. I really don’t mind being in there. I have my favorite blanket, a toy, and usually a rawhide for me to chew on! Speaking of treats..I love them! I am not picky about what kind of treat I get and my foster mom appreciates how nicely I take treats from anyone's hand. When teaching me new things, treats are a big motivator for me! I currently know the commands of “sit” and “lay down”. We are also working on what is called the counting game! When I get too distracted by my surroundings my foster mom starts counting, the faster I notice her counting the faster I get a treat! There are some cats at my foster home and I really want to chase them! The one cat does not seem to be phased about me wanting to chase her but my foster mom steps in and does not let me do so. The other cat does his best to avoid me. Foster mom thinks because my breed is known to have a high prey drive that maybe my forever home would be best without cats. My foster mom says I need to also let you know about the not so great thing about me, even though I am pretty awesome. Sometimes I am not great at first impressions. I have a high reactivity towards strangers. I'm vocal when I don't know you. I’m not a fan of when people put their hand out to pet me right away when I do not know them. So what they call “gentle introductions” work the best for me. What is a “gentle introduction” you ask? Well when I meet new people my foster mom has them give me treats since she knows that's the way to my heart and then we all go for a short walk. I really enjoy that! It gives me a few minutes to observe who you are and to understand that everything is ok. My foster mom says she is really impressed on how quickly I start to relax and warm up to someone new through gentle introductions. Usually I am pals with a new person in just minutes! Some other fun facts about me is I don't mind my paws being touched so clipping my nails is pretty easy. Just give me a treat while doing it and I'm occupied! I don't mind water. I'll take showers pretty often because my beautiful white coat can look dirty pretty quick. I do pretty well going for walks. Yes I get a little excited and pull here and there but I don't bark at other people or dogs very much. I really enjoy car rides! I just curl up in the back seat and make myself at home. I feel like my ideal forever home would have another pit bull like me or not as I can just be the center of attention. Probably a more quiet home, at least where there would not be a lot of strangers coming around all the time. A home with a yard I can run around. I do not get along with every dog I encounter so dog parks are not the best place for me. People that will love me as much as I will love them! Because my foster mom says I have a lot of love to give! I really hope to meet you! Side note from foster mom: Koko is receiving training from a dog trainer for her high reactivity towards new people! She has been improving! Kailua (Koko) weighs 55 lbs and is from PUPS, a Local Impound in MN. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application.
