| Overview: | This breed is unknown outside Germany and is rare, if not extinct, even at home. He had a wavy, poodlelike coat that tended to form in cords like the Poodle, Puli and Komondor. In fact, he was probably related to the Puli, as the importation and exportation of sheep between Germany and Hungary was common. And where the sheep went, the sheep dogs followed. The Schafpudel was a good herding dog with drop ears, long tail, and a gentle, tolerant and affectionate nature. |

| Character: | This rare herding breed is loyal, intelligent and energetic. They have temperament that can help these dogs be good family pets but this breed is not recommended as family pet for small children. Having strong herding instinct can mean the dog will get excited by squeals and running of the children and may try to herd them by nipping or biting. Early socialization and training is a must for this breed to make it more compatible with other dogs and pets in the family. Also the dog should be exposed to different people, places and environments to eradicate any possible shy to aggressive nature. As a herding dog, the breed is intelligent and may be a little stubborn. It will require an experienced owner to handle this dog well. |
| Temperament: | Energetic, free-spirited, with good movement. |
| Care: | The long and shaggy coat needs less grooming. Brushing needs are all too low. Cords will form in the coat that will need to be parted. Bathe only when necessary. |
| Training: | Like many herding breeds, who develop an independent nature, this dog can also be stubborn and willful on occasions. It will need an experienced owner and handler to train this dog through positive, gentle yet firm training methods. |
| Activity: | Like all working dogs, the German Sheeppoodle has high physical activity needs. It will need lots of exercise and playing time to be happy and content. |
